Spring and autumn are ideal for city walks, road trips and food travel. Summer is best for beach days, but popular coastal towns can be busy.

For a first trip, pair Lisbon with Sintra and Cascais, or Porto with the Douro Valley. Add Algarve or Madeira when you want more nature and coast.

Trains work well between Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and Faro. A car helps for remote beaches, viewpoints, villages and flexible photography stops.
